Katie Holmes appeared relaxed and happy as she treated her daughter to a late night ice cream at Sundaes & Cones in New York’s East Village last night.Clearly determined to shield Suri from the drama surrounding her high-profile divorce to Tom Cruise, the 33-year-old actress was spotted playing and giggling with the adorable six-year-old, as she gave her a loving hug.
Suri looked delighted to be enjoying an ice cream with her mum and she lovingly stroked her face.
Suri’s future is believed to have been a key factor in Katie’s decision to divorce her movie star husband after five years. She is thought to have been concerned about Tom’s desire for their daughter to become involved in the Scientology religion.
News of Tom and Katie’s separation emerged on Friday June 29, when it was announced that Katie had filed divorce papers citing “irreconcilable differences”.
Katie’s attorney, Jonathan Wolfe, confirmed the split, releasing a statement which said: “He said: ''This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family. Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest.''
Tom’s representative also released a statement which said: ''Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy.''
Neither Katie nor Tom has commented on the reasons behind the split.
